About 8 yrs ago I happened upon a chainsaw carving event and was fascinated! We watched these amazing men and women create beautiful sculptures each day. I told my husband I thought I could do that if I had a chainsaw. His reply, "you'd cut your arm off!" However; he bought me a chainsaw for Mother's Day and I've been at it ever since. I'm a self-taught carver, not having other carvers in my area to learn from. Carving is therapy to me.

After teaching American History and coaching   high school football and track for 30 years, Pat Holbert retired and decided to go in a different direction. He flew to Europe and signed up for classes at the prestigious Geisler-Moroder school of wood-carving in Elbiginalp,  Austria. Here he learned the centuries-old art of carving wood by hand. He then came back home where he thought he might be able to translate what he   learned in Austria to the art of chainsaw carving...and the rest is history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hotairballoonist@hotmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The Chainsaw Carving event is in it's 3rd year in 2023.

The carvers begin carving at 7am and they finish the day at 5pm.

Of course! It's the loudest, messiest, bit of awesomeness you will ever watch! Just be sure to bring a camera, you'll want to get lots of pictures. Also if you have some with you that are sensitive to sound, bring ear coverings, and sunglasses will help with any sawdust that may blow toward you.

You bet! The carvers bring fantastic works of art with them that are available for purchase.

Yes there will be an auction, and the question is will you be the highest bidder? Come and join others in our live auction.

The carvers will carve rain or shine, however if the weather conditions are dangerous they will not be able to carve.

You can expect to see the carvers in their element! Carving starts early and you will hear the buzz of the chainsaws all day long. There will be some competition throughout with a quick carve and a masterpiece, these pieces will be auctioned off so you will want to get there and see what you want to bid on! The carvers take the time to answer questions, let you get up close, at a safe distance, and watch all the action!

You can bring your dog, just make sure they are on a leash and are able to get along with other dogs and their owners! Also make sure you are prepared to clean up after your dog. This event is held at a public park so you will need to make sure you always have control over your dog.
